If you are looking for an easy side dish recipe, why not make your own refried beans using dried beans from scratch?!

When cooking from scratch you always have that Homemade VS Store Bought dilemma.   But let me tell you, these beans ARE the magical fruit!   To me they taste better than what you can buy in the store, so take that Rosarita!

Homemade refried beans are much more flavorful, and healthier too.  Be sure to make a big batch because they freeze really well!

How to Make Refried Beans in a Crock Pot:

slow_cooker_refried_beans

Ingredients:

1lb dried Pinto Beans
1 package of Bacon, cut up in small chunks
2 T Granulated Onion
2 t  Salt
1 T Cumin
2 T Garlic (you can add less, I just love garlic)
3 cups water
3 cups chicken broth

**Note – the bacon is an extra step, and one that is delicious – but not necessary

Things you can ad to spice it up:  Jalapenos or Green Chiles

Wash the beans first then put everything in the crock-pot on high.  Will need to cook for about 4-6 hours.  Check mid way through to see if there is enough liquid.  If not boil water and add more.  They are done when the beans can smash the beans easily along the side of the crockpot.  You should still have plenty of liquid in the pot before you blend, otherwise they will be too dry.

Once cooked through I use a hand blender.

Freezing Refried Beans is simple too!

All you need to do is simply fill your 1 gallon ziploc plastic bag with the refried beans (make sure they are cooled down first), press it flat, and seal. Using a chopstick or another blunt object and score the meat into equal sections by pressing on the bag.   I am only using one bag, but have 4 portions!

Having the proper kitchen tools always make things a little easier – If you don’t have a Hand Blender, you could always use a food processer or Blender – you will just have to work in batches and it might be a little more difficult.
