• Asking You | Trader Joes – Basil Plants Are In, now how do I keep it alive?!

    Trader Joes

I shopped for my weekly groceries today at Trader Joes ($86.10 -gulp) and was so excited to see that they now have live Fresh Basil Plants in for $2.99!!   Now I would like to say I have a green thumb, but I can only grow the plants that don’t count – Raspberries, Dahlias, Strawberries, oregano…you get the point.  So  my question for you is….How can I keep this plant alive?   I live in the Northwest in case you need to know that :)

I quickly bought and killed 3 trader joes basil plants before I figured it out. First it is best if you replant them in a big pot by themselves ( like 12 in. diameter). The real key is to never take off the bottom two leaves on each stem. Inside in a window is best. I kept one alive for two years that way.

It’s too cool to plant outdoor yet, so I would keep indoors until May. Yes, put in in a larger pot or plant when warmer. Clip back all emerging flowers right away. You can keep harvesting most of the leaves (like Jillian says) and you should get several crops through the summer. Likes sunny spots. Bring indoors in the fall if you want but this is really an annual plant.

Basil is super easy to keep alive! What Jillian said about keeping the bottom two leaves and what Sue said about clipping the flowers is how we did it – We made so much pesto and shared with all our friends and still had lots of basil

They need a lot of heat and sun…… my house doesn’t have a warm enough or good south facing window to try and keep them indoors, so I usually wait and buy one or two around memorial day or the first week of June, and then transplant them to my garden with the tomatoes and they do really well.

there were like 7 plants in the trader joe’s ‘potted plant’ that i got. i separated a few out so they now each have more room and they are doing great!

HOW MUCH WATER DO YOU USE TO WATER THE BAIL PLANT IN A POT OUT DOORS, AND HOW OFTER DO YOU WATER THE BASIL PLANT?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR ADVISE.

    7. Great information. Lucky me I came across your website by chance (stumbleupon).
