My Walgreens Shopping Trip and Vlog on how I did it! Paid $9.07, Saved $53.12!

December 16, 2011

So I confess I haven’t shopped at Walgreens in a long time.  A big part of this is I haven’t really needed anything, or I just assumed they wouldn’t have the stock.  One thing I have told myself is that I am not going to chase the deal if it wasn’t something I needed.  Well I needed hair clips, so time to start running!

After posting the Walgreens Match Ups for the 4 Day Sale I received a comment from reader Ellen and how she roller her transactions.  I pulled my hair up in a pony tail, grabbed my coat and off I went, NO Make-Up!  As I was driving there I had this little talk with myself

“Amber what are you doing, they are going to be out of stock”

“You tell people not to run to the store and chase the deal”

….what was I thinking!

Pep talk back to self: “Well if it’s not in stock I could just see the fun items they have on clearance, so the trip won’t be total waste of time”

Do you have these conversations with yourself??  Seriously, or am I going nutso (don’t answer that)

Well I am happy to say that I got every thing I needed AND some cute little tins for my Almond Roca!

Here is what I did:

Transaction # 1

Salonpas Heat Patch $1.00
Goody Hair Clips $2.00
Pay: $3.00, get $1.00 RR from Salonpas & $2.00 RR from Goody

Transaction # 2

1 Revlon Top Coat Nail Polish $3.99
1 Almond Roca Tin $0.74 on clearance *
use $1/1 Revlon cosmetic from Walgreens Make this Season stunning coupon book (found at cosmetic counter)
use $1/1 RR from previous transaction & $2.00 RR from previous transaction
Final Price:  $0.73 + Tax & got $3.00 RR

*you could find a cheaper filler item around the store like the $0.13 pencils, I just needed these

Transaction #3

Salonpas Heat Patch $1.00
Goody Hair Clips $2.00
Used $3.00 RR from Revlon
Pay: $0 + tax, get $1.00 RR from Salonpas & $2.00 RR from Goody

& I just kept doing the same thing until I had

5 Revlon Top Coat Nail Polish, 5 SalonPas Patches, 5 Goody Hair Clips, 2 Pencils & 3 Cookie Tins = $9.07, I also have a $3.00 RR for later

Saved $53.12!

Here is my Vlog Step By Step Video on what I did!

Way to go, Amber! I often talk myself out of going to Walgreen’s or Rite Aid, thinking they won’t have any left. Today I was very pleasantly surprised too!

I have found that going on Sunday when I go to buy my newspapers works best because they have everything on my list in stock. I also know what days they get their trucks at the stores I go to so that if I don’t get to go on Sunday I can go another day.

I like Walgreens in the event you have a few RR $s to roll on other products and they don’t limit you unless it’s the last on the shelf. I got 9 Revlon Nailpolish, 9 Goody’s Hairclips/Hairties, 9 Sodas, and 9 Russell Stovers Candies for $15 this past week, by rolling my RRs on each transaction.

How do your Walgreens cashiers react to getting so many free items with rolling the RRs? Mine frown on that and some have said they do not allow more than one item per person (even though no policy or sign says that). This is the cashier, not management.

I have found this with certain Walgreens but was pleasantly surprised when I visited a friend’s store about 20 minutes away and they were friendly and ready for us couponers. No problems, and they even had extra in stock just for that purpose so try a different store. It is worth it. Good luck!

I psyche myself out ALL the time! I tried to do that on Thanksgiving, saying that I should prep instead of shop, but I went to Walgreens anyway. I started an avalanche, lol. Over the course of two and a half days, I went to 5 different Wags (and more separate shopping trips and transactions than I care to admit)… Total retail purchase was around $1,100.. after it was all said and done, I had spent a total of $105, and had $120 in RR in my hand (which I used at Freddy’s to buy some much needed clothes for my 10 y/o). That is the ONLY instance where I would consider myself an extreme couponer, lol.

Almost all of the oral care items bought (and the prep h wipes) were donated to my uncle’s assisted living facility… So I think it was justified. :-)

I too spent a lot of time at Walgreens and rite aid over thanksgiving weekend. Everyone this year has full stockings and not with apples and oranges! Tons of needed stuff and FREE!!!!

I work at a Skilled nursing facility and often donate items for my residents. Most only get $57 a month for personal items so I try to make sure we have lots of fun things for everyone. The covergirl coupon a while back was a lot of fun for the women in my facility!

I often view Walgreens as a waste of time in my area – their mangement is fussy and if you are not there at opening on the first day of the sale, well forget about snagging anything. It has to be a pretty hot deal to get me in there – frankly I haven’t been in one since last Aug. I do love Rite Aid though, super friendly, wonderful managers and they don’t act like they hate couponers.
